BugMap Privacy Notice
Effective June 18, 2026.
Data storage
BugMap stores sightings, preferences, and project data locally in your browser unless you choose to export or save a project file. BugMap does not operate a central sightings database in this release.
Anonymous service analytics
The production website sends a randomly generated anonymous browser identifier to count users, sessions, current activity, and interface-control clicks. Click analytics record only the identifier of the clicked control, such as an Add, Export, or map-style button; they do not record text entered by the user, map contents, coordinates, notes, uploaded images, or project files. Active-session records expire from the active count after 90 seconds. BugMap also records a separate random installation identifier when the installable web app is successfully installed or opened in standalone mode.
BugMap does not currently collect names or email addresses. If an account or optional email feature is added later, the notice and interface will be updated before that information is collected.
Public analytics cards display aggregate counts only. Technical request information may be processed briefly by Cloudflare for security, abuse prevention, rate limiting, logging, and delivery of the website.
Third-party map services
When a map is displayed, your browser requests map tiles from the selected provider. Those providers may receive technical information such as your IP address, browser details, referring domain, and requested map area under their own privacy terms.
Uploaded images
Images selected as marker icons are processed in your browser and may be stored inside your local BugMap project. Do not include confidential or personally identifying images.
Exports
Files you export or save are controlled by you. Review them before sharing because they can contain coordinates and field observations.
Changes
This notice may be updated when BugMap adds hosted accounts, analytics, synchronization, or other online services.
